The McIntosh Laboratory plant on Binghamton's South Side has been hiring new employees in recent months and the workforce is expected to grow more.

The well-known maker of high-end audio equipment has operated a production facility on Chambers Street - just off Conklin Avenue - since 1956.

The company is part of McIntosh Group, which was acquired this month by Highland Partners, a private investment firm based in Texas.

McIntosh Group communications manager Julia Lescarbeau said about 170 people now are employed at the Binghamton site. In an email, she said there are plans to increase the workforce to 200 before the end of the year.

McIntosh Laboratory last September announced an expansion project at the Chambers Street plant to provide additional space for its metal shop, fabrication and final assembly operations. Lescarbeau said the project is scheduled to be completed this summer.

Charles Randall will continue to serve as McIntosh president. Lescarbeau said McIntosh has "no plans or intention of moving locations." In her email, she said "we plan to continue to operate in our Binghamton factory." She wrote: "We love Binghamton and are here to stay!!"

Although McIntosh Group employs "cross-pollination in terms of ideation and creation" with its other brands, Lescarbeau wrote "all finished goods and final products are proudly made in Binghamton, with a few technologies imported from experts and top manufacturers around the world."

The McIntosh Group describes itself as a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of high-end home audio equipment worldwide. In addition to McIntosh Labs, it also includes Sonus faber, Fine Sounds UK, Sumiko Audio and Fine Sounds Benelux.
